From Bio-based Materials to Circular Packaging Solutions
Today’s spotlight is on one of BIO-UPTAKE’s demonstrators: the bio-based lid for garbage containers, illustrated through our value chain infographic.
This value chain shows how BIO-UPTAKE rethinks conventional packaging products by combining bio-based materials, advanced manufacturing processes, and circular design principles.
🔁 From materials to product
The process starts with BioPA and recycled carbon fibres, which are compounded through extrusion to create innovative bio-pellets and organosheets, integrated with Covalent Adaptable Networks (CANs). These intermediate formats are then used in an over-injection process to manufacture the final product: a robust, high-performance garbage container lid.
🌱 Key advantages delivered by Bio-Uptake
This demonstrator highlights the tangible benefits of the project’s approach:
- 35% less weight compared to conventional solutions
- 22% less plastic used, without compromising performance
- Designed for remanufacturing and recycling, thanks to CAN technology
- Reduced environmental impact while remaining compatible with industrial processes
By redesigning both materials and processes, BIO-UPTAKE proves that sustainable packaging solutions can be lighter, more circular, and industrially viable.
