Final Phase: Recyclability of Composite Plates
Final Phase: Recyclability of Composite Plates
As the Bio-Uptake project enters its final months, the focus is now on a crucial step towards circularity: the recyclability of Comfil composite plates.
Centexbel has received different types of bio-based composite plates from Comfil ApS:
- PLA/PLA
- PLA/PCL
The objective is to assess and validate viable reprocessing strategies, ensuring that these materials can effectively re-enter the manufacturing loop.
🔬 Two recycling pathways are currently being investigated:
1️⃣ Direct 100% reprocessing via Injection Moulding
2️⃣ Partial reincorporation into yarn extrusion, testing different ratios (10%, 20%, 30% and 50%) to produce new PLA/PLA or PLA/PCL bicomponent yarns
This approach allows us to evaluate:
- Material performance after reprocessing
- Mechanical property retention
- Feasibility of closed-loop textile-to-composite systems
- Industrial scalability of recycling routes
By combining composite manufacturing, yarn extrusion and/or injection moulding, Bio-Uptake is taking concrete steps towards functional circular solutions for bio-based composites.
